The Permaculture & Syntropic Agroforestry Course Details

Date: 29 Nov - 3 Dec 2025 (5 days)

Location: KL Steiner School (Valley Campus)

Time: 9 - 6 pm with optional* evening programs on some days

Prerequisites for attending the course: Willing to get hands dirty & sweat it out :)

Trainers:

  • Bunya Halasz (Lead Trainer)

  • Shanker Bala (Soil Biology Trainer & Co-Facilitator)

  • Sabina Arokiam (Convenor & Co-Facilitator)

Language of Instruction: English

Method of Instruction:

Our method blends immersive theory with hands-on practice on a real project site, using Dynamic Group Facilitation to spark creativity, collaboration, and sensory-rich learning. Each day unfolds organically—between classroom sessions and the outdoors—as we  dance with the rain, flow with the monsoon rhythms, and learn to align our observations and interactions to nature's patterns.

Prerequisite:

Willing to get hands dirty and sweat it out in nature :)

Who is this Course for ?

  • from curiosity to practice:  Beginners discovering Permaculture and Urban Farmers/Gardeners strengthening resilience in their communities and environment.

  • from theory to action:  Educators, students, sustainability advocates & all seeking to apply ecological principles.

  • from urban to rural:  Community organisers greening spaces, regenerative farming practitioners, landscape architects designing regenerative spaces.

The Focus

Small and mid-scale regenerative applications for food security, habitat restoration, climate and community resilience and carbon sequestration.

Can be applied and adapted for:

  • Regenerative farms & homesteads

  • Community Urban Gardens

  • Educational & Demonstration Sites

  • Agroforestry & Food Forest Projects

  • Land restoration & conservation

  • Eco Tourism & Retreat Centres

Topics (Theory & Hands-on Sessions)

Day 1: Foundations – Observing Nature’s Blueprint

  • Introduction to Permaculture & Syntropic Agroforestry as a synergistic framework.

  • The Art of Observation: Applying Yin-Yang awareness and reading landscape patterns

  • Understanding ecological principles of disturbance, natural succession, and stratification.

  • Observing and applying natural patterns to accelerate ecological succession.

Day 2: Design – Working with the Elements and Systems

  • Harnessing site energies — Earth, Water, Wind, and Fire (Sun) — in land design.

  • Applying Scales of Permanence and Zoning for effective site layout.

  • The Syntropic Planting Framework: Using life cycles and strata for phased planting.

  • Designing a consortium and selecting species for function, synergy, and yield.

Day 3: Implementation – Grounding the Living System

  • The Soil Food Web and techniques for cultivating soil life.

  • Theory and hands-on practice in fungi cultivation within agroforestry systems.

  • Site Preparation: Step-by-step process for establishing the first planting area.

  • Planting the First Consortium: Implementing the design from Day 2.

Day 4: Management – Fueling the System’s Growth

  • Biomass and light management to maintain system vitality.

  • Pruning techniques and hands-on ‘chop-and-drop’ for mulching and growth stimulation.

  • Practical session on managing woody biomass and cultivating mushrooms on logs.

  • Introducing secondary species and planning for continuous yields.

Day 5: Integration – Yields, Cycles, and the Bigger Picture

  • Advanced consortium design and species selection for diverse yields (food, fuel, fibre, & income).

  • Yield Planning and Management: Ensuring abundance across time and space.

  • Aligning with natural cycles and planting seasons.

  • Case Studies and Synthesis: Learning from mature projects, reflections, and final Q&A.
